Both the king and queen have wide bases meaning the whole set is comfortable only on chess boards of at least 21 inches. The deep red of the dark pieces complements playing surfaces made from woods of similar hues. The black and white knights are without doubt the most striking pieces on the board. The detailed bridle gives each horse a restrained appearance; well trained and ready for battle. These chessmen take more than two months to make, and it is of no great surprise that the knight takes the longest to carve.

Pour tous ceux qui sont fâchés avec l'anglais (et je ne parle pas seulement des fans de rugby), voici la traduction du dernier opus magnus de Watson. Félicitons Olibris, et rappelons seulement que le MI américain fait ici le tour de la théorie contemporaine (sur 1.e4), dans une perspective très générale et hautement pédagogique (non, ce n'est pas un gros mot). On pourra juste regretter une ou deux impasses faites par l'auteur (Sveshnikov), mais c'est vraiment histoire de pinailler.

Un CD entier sur une ouverture bien marginale : le début Van Geet, i.e. 1.Cc3. L'idée principale du début, c'est la variante 1.Cc3 d5 2.e4 (qui peut évidemment aussi être choisie contre la Scandinave). Face aux autres principales réponses noires (1...e5, 1...c5), le joueur peu désireux de rentrer dans les ouvertures classiques (Sicilienne, Viennoise...) peut essayer des systèmes incluant le fianchetto-roi accompagné soit du modeste d3, soit plus ambitieusement de Cf3 suivi de d4, amenant des positions certes proches desdites ouvertures classiques... mais suffisamment différentes pour se révéler piégeuses pour le joueur noir mal préparé et peu méfiant. En attendant la parution annoncée de la version anglaise de Der Linksspringer, ce CD vous permettra de faire le tour des possibilités de ce premier coup inhabituel.

Malgré le titre, ce livre de l'ex-champion d'URSS (comme cela semble loin) n'est pas un manuel de tactique, mais un traité sur l'attaque - ce qui est assez différent. Il nous expose en effet, à travers des parties complètes amplement commentées (puisées dans les carrières de Tal, Petrosian et naturellement lui-même), les thèmes offensifs propres à différents types d'ouvertures et de positions (Sicilienne, Caro, pion-dame isolé) Nourri d'une énorme expérience, servi par un style vivant, voilà un livre qui sort du lot.
