Gonzalez - The English defence

The English Defence (1 d4 e6 2 c4 b6) is a dynamic, counter-attacking line, initially investigated by English grandmasters. Black aims to set White difficult problems to solve at the very earliest stage of the game. Black’s play is provocative – aiming to lure White into establishing a big pawn centre. This is a risky strategy as White falls behind in development and Black switfly becomes very active. However, if White’s response is more circumspect then Black can often manoeuvre into favourable structures reminiscent of positions arising from the Nimzo-Indian Defence, the Queen’s Indian Defence or even the Dutch.

José González provides an excellent analysis of this complex opening and carves out a powerful repertoire for Black covering all lines after 1 d4. It is possible for White to avoid the "English battle" by playing either 2 Nf3 or even 2 e4 (a rare move for 1 d4 players but seen occasionally). Gonzalez champions an aggressive variant of the Dutch against 2 Nf3 and outlines a simple but effective French Defence repertoire to counter 2 e4.

Playing for a win with ...b6 by Semko Semkov. The author proposes a full repertoire against 1.d4 and 1.c4, which is theoretically sound and leads to sharp, strategically unbalanced positions. It is based on the so-called English Defence 1.d4 e6 2.c4 b6 or 1.c4 b6. A great deal of the book is devoted to White's tries to deviate from theoretical dispute and transfer the game into the Queen's Indian with g3. 236 pages

Déjà le troisième pavé de la nouvelle série Everyman (apparemment destinée à remplacer les Starting out désormais un peu périmés, après 10 ans de bons et loyaux services), consacré à la très importante défense Nimzo-indienne. Incontestablement, la formule fonctionne : le système questions-réponses est pertinent, les exercices apportent du dynamisme, la présentation est impeccable et le texte comme toujours clair et vivant. Du bon boulot.

Autre série bien connue, les ' Play the ' de chez Everyman encore que ' série ' est peut-être beaucoup dire, puisque éditeur et auteurs semblent infoutus de se mettre d'accord sur une formule fixe : ce nouvel opus (consacré aux variantes avec Fa6) ne présente en effet aucune partie complète, ce qui réduit son intérêt. D'autre part, l'Ouest-indienne ne se suffisant pas à elle-même, il vous faudra au moins un deuxième bouquin - en cas de 3.Cc3

Que ceux qui trouvent le sujet un peu pointu se le disent : on l'a échappé belle. Les auteurs nous informent en effet que leur intention première était de se consacrer uniquement à la variante 4Fb7 - c'est l'éditeur qui a obtenu le rajout d'un (court) chapitre sur les autres réponses noires - qu'il en soit remercié Bref, si vous en avez assez de devoir surveiller toutes les nouveautés qui n'arrêtent pas de se produire sur les différentes lignes résultant de 4.g3, ce livre peut vous intéresser - la variante 4.a3 étant quand même plus stable

MARIN - Grandmaster...

MARIN - Grandmaster Repertoire : The English vol 1

Pour tous ceux à qui le Watson n'aurait pas suffi, ceci est le premier volume d'une série de je suppose trois, puisque ce très volumineux pavé ne traite que les lignes découlant de 1.c4 e5 (et encore pas toutes puisqu'il s'agit d'un répertoire blanc). Dans un avant-propos (plutôt une notice d'utilisation, en fait), l'auteur demande au lecteur de lire son opus intégralement dans l'ordre. Je me demande si quelqu'un aura le courage de suivre cette recommandation

VIGORITO - Challenging the Nimzo-Indian

Marrant, le titre si lon considère quaffronter la Nimzo, cest précisément ce que la majorité des joueurs évite soigneusement de faire... Mais comme on le sait, on ne résout pas un problème en lévitant surtout que les alternatives à base de 3.Cf3 laissent toute latitude aux noirs et promettent aux blancs peu de satisfactions. Pour en revenir au livre, il ne sagit pas (malgré son titre) dune sélection à lusage des blancs, mais dune vraie monographie sur la variante classique (4.Dc2), traitant en détail toutes les lignes importantes. Considérant que le dernier ouvrage sur le sujet remontait à 2001, celui-ci (qui semble en tous points solide) ne devrait pas être perdu pour tout le monde...
