A quick word to introduce the products in this section, which may be unfamiliar to the European public. Stones from go can be distinguished neither by their diameter nor, naturally, by their shape. What makes the difference between the different qualities is the thickness (a matter of individual taste, but most experts agree on an ideal size of around 9 mm), and above all the material. There are some very inexpensive plastic ones, which are good for starting out, but won't satisfy the hardcore player for long. The standard material is glass paste. But the nec plus ultra are mother-of-pearl (white) and slate (black) stones. While there is only one type of slate (from Wakayama province), the Japanese still distinguish three qualities of mother-of-pearl: Yuki (snow), the most sought-after, which can be recognized by the fine, parallel pale-gray lines striating the stone (these are the ones in the photo, but the contrast has been increased to make the lines more apparent); Tsuki (moon), with curved, less regular gray lines; and finally Jitsuyo, which has no regular patterns and is slightly brown in color. Now it's up to you to make an informed choice! '
