The English Opening is very popular nowadays, but 1.c4 e5! is a serious challenge and not to everyone's taste. Here comes 1.Nf3, with the idea to transfer the game into the English with c2-c4 to follow. The only hurdle on that path is 1...d5. Then White is at a crossroads. 2.c4 allows 2...d4 3.b4, while 2.e3 is an attempt to deny ...d4. Black can revive the threat with 2...c5, and again, White has a choice. 3.c4 d4 4.b4! leads to the Blumenfeld with reversed colours. Or he can continue to fight against ...d4 with 3.b3. Version anglaise de Linksspringer - ce qui amène tout de suite une question fondamentale : pourquoi ne pas avoir appelé ce livre The Left Knight ? Le titre Knight on the Left est en effet vaguement ambigu : le cavalier est-il à gauche, ou s'y dirige-t-il ? Dans le second cas, on pourrait croire que l'ouverture traitée est 1.Ca3 - auquel cas le livre aurait été tout de même moins épais - voire 1.Cf3 (Right Knght on the Left...). Bon, d'accord, j'arrête ces digressions oiseuses : ce livre est bien sur le début Dunst-Van Geet-Mestrovic-Appelez-le comme vous voulez, à savoir 1.Cc3 (Left Knight to the Right, ça, c'eut été un titre précis...). Comme on l'avait déjà dit à propos de la version teutonne, le travail fourni ici est considérable (380 pages...) et l'auteur répond à toutes les questions que vous pouvez vous poser (et surtout à celles que vous n'aviez jamais pensé à vous poser) sur cette ouverture marginale; mais pleine de possibilités. Toutes les questions... excepté, sans doute, celle à laquelle personne n'a jamais trouvé de réponse vraiment satisfaisante : que faire sur 1...c5 quand on n'a pas envie de rentrer dans une Sicilienne ? Rien, ni personne, n'est parfait...

COX - Dealing with d4 deviations

Après Play the Open Games as Black (1.e4 e5 sans Fb5), Anti-sicilians, a guide for black (Sicilienne sans Cf3-d4) et quelques autres, voici un nouveau représentant de la famille 'Que faire quand le peigne-cul d'en face refuse d'entrer dans la défense que vous aviez préparée'. Comme son titre l'indique, celui-ci est consacré aux débuts du pion-dame, mais il faut dire tout de suite que son contenu (et partant sa cible) est un peu flou. La plus grande part est évidemment destinée au joueur de Nimzo/Ouest-indienne (attaque Torre (2.Cf3, 3.Fg5) ou Hebden-Torre (2.Cf3, 3.c3, 4.Fg5), système de Londres (2.Cf3, 3.Ff4), système Colle (2.Cf3, 3.e3), Trompowsky (2.Fg5) ou Veresov (2.Cc3, 3.Fg5)) - mais comme une partie de ces lignes (Londres, Colle ou Veresov) peut aussi intéresser le zélateur de la Slave ou l'adepte du Gambit-dame, l'auteur a choisi d'inclure à leur intention de courts chapitres sur la Pseudo-Tromp (a.k.a. ouverture du fou-dame, 1.d4 d5 2.Fg5) et le Blackmar-Diemer (1.d4 d5 2.e4). Et plus étrangement, il achève son ouvrage sur un chapitre consacré aux variantes anti-Benoni - ou plutôt anti-Benoni différée, i.e. 1.d4 Cf6 2.c4 e6 3.Cf3 c5 sans 4.d5. Bref, il a essayé de ratisser large, et beaucoup de ses lecteurs auraient peut-être préféré un travail plus approfondi sur certaines lignes... Pour le contenu, il s'agit évidemment d'une formule répertoire (une seule ligne de jeu noire est conseillée pour chaque variante blanche - par exemple 2.e6 contre la Trompowsky) traitée dans le même style que Play the Najdorf Scheveningen Style, c'est-à-dire sans parties complètes. Dommage...
